Peter and Kathleen McAleney
run New Meadow and have grown it
into one of the top distributors
in the state. The boats come in
daily from the outer islands of
Casco Bay to sell their catch to
this group. The McAleney family
has had a presence on the Portland
waterfront for over 100 years and
Peter serves as the President of
the Maine Lobster Dealers Association.
He knows lobster. It’s been a while
since we visited but New Meadow
has always been a clean and well
kept facility. They have holding
tanks that handle up to 35000 lbs
which they turn over quickly, selling
to stores and restaurants regionally
and nationally. New Meadow offers
lobsters and steamer clams as well
as cooked lobster and picked lobster
meat. They cook and clean on the
premises so you know the quality
is top notch. They ship their boxes
including bibs, place mats and some
fun information about Portland.
For his overnight customers, Pete
only ships hardshells during the
summer shedding season and on any
order of 10 or more he uses slot
boxes for maximum protection. Sustainability
continues to be the big issue for
the Maine lobster industry and with
smart, dedicated lobstermen like
Pete heading up the dealers association,
the industry is in good hands.
